DTE Energy Company engages in the electric and natural gas utility businesses in Michigan. The company operates in three segments: Electric Utility, Gas Utility, and Non-Utility Operations. The Electric Utility segment engages in the generation, purchase, distribution, and sale of electricity for residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale customers. It generates electricity from fossil plants, hydroelectric pumped storage plant, and nuclear plants, as well as purchases electricity from electricity generators, suppliers, and wholesalers. The Gas Utility segment engages in the purchase, storage, transmission, distribution, and sale of natural gas for residential, commercial, and industrial customers. It offers gas sales, end user transportation, intermediate transportation, and gas storage services. The Non-Utility Operations segment includes coal transportation and marketing; gas pipelines, processing, and storage; unconventional gas project development and production; power and industrial projects services, such as pulverized coal and petroleum coke supply, power generation, steam production, chilled water production, wastewater treatment, and compressed air supply; and energy marketing and trading operations. As of December 31, 2007, the company operated power generation and electric distribution facilities that served approximately 2.2 million customers; and provided natural gas to approximately 1.3 million customers. It owned distribution system of approximately 19,000 miles of distribution mains, 1,193,000 service lines, and 1,316,000 active meters; approximately 2,400 miles of transmission lines that deliver natural gas to the distribution districts and interconnect storage fields with the sources of supply and the market areas; and properties relating to four underground natural gas storage fields with a working gas storage capacity of approximately 129 Bcf.
